Conversations on Leadership

David Wright: Are there any other leadership core competencies to consider in today's business environment?
Duval: I truly believe it helps to be a whole-brain thinker. By this, I mean leaders must have the flexibility to use whichever part of the brain is required for any given situation. When reviewing financial information, one needs to think analytically. When a leader is required to attend to the needs of others, he or she needs to use empathy and emotion. Leaders should enjoy diversity and capitalize on the variety that is around them. Leaders should be honest about their own improvement opportunities and surround themselves with teams of people with complimentary attributes. In addition, I believe strongly that leaders should continue to establish challenging goals and objectives, and they should communicate their expectations often and consistently throughout the team and organization. It shouldn't just be a once-a-year thing. It should be the mantra that guides the staff throughout the year.
Wright: Speaking of change in business environment, how does your company adjust its "Workshops That Work" to the various types and sizes of organizations?
Duval: One of the advantages of being in the business of improving team and individual performance is that these issues affect a wide variety of organizations, both large and small. We can reach into our training toolbox in order to provide just the right mix of servies. Some clients prefer that TLD develop and deliver workshops...However, other clients prefer that we develop workshops and have their internal resources facilitate the sessions themselves.
